Matan B'Seiser - SFF
What is "Matan B'Seiser"?
Matan B'Seiser (מתן בסתר) is a Hebrew term that translates to "giving in secret." It represents one of the highest and most respected forms of charity (tzedakah) in Jewish tradition. The principle is that the donor remains anonymous to the recipient, and often, the recipient remains anonymous to the donor.
This ideal is beautifully illuminated by the teaching in Pirkei Avot, ויהיו עניים בני ביתך ("Let the poor be members of your household"). The Steipler Gaon, Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Kanievsky, explains this with a profound insight: the goal is to make the recipient feel as comfortable as a child receiving from a parent—naturally, and without any sense of shame or indebtedness. This ensures that help is given with the utmost dignity.
It is for this reason that the great scholar Maimonides placed anonymous giving near the very top of his "Ladder of Charity"—because it is a pure act of kindness, focused entirely on the well-being and honor of the recipient.
